From Engineering to UI/UX Design: My Journey as a Junior Trainer

Published on 10 Nov , 2023

Introduction:

Hi there, I'm Hima, a UIUX designer at ITLH and a junior trainer at UIUX Global. I'm excited to share my experiences and learning over the past couple of years and while I know there's a lot more to discover and accomplish, I'm grateful for the journey so far.

The Design Bug:

My passion for design was evident early on: Even though I pursued a degree in Information Technology, I landed graphic design internships and committee roles, and found myself gravitating toward anything and everything creative. The allure of creating visually appealing, user-friendly experiences was irresistible, and, with time, I knew design was more than just a passing interest.

A Pandemic Discovery:

The COVID-19 pandemic brought unforeseen challenges, but it also presented an opportunity to reevaluate my career choices. During this time, I discovered the exciting realm of UIUX Design. With more time on my hands, I dabbled in a few UIUX projects, and it felt like discovering a hidden talent.

The Learning Journey:

The more I explored the world of UIUX Design, the more I wanted to learn. I took a bold step and left my engineering job to pursue this field. I found UIUX Global, a company that offered me a dual role as a Graphic Designer and Junior UIUX Designer. Thanks to the company, I also got a chance to enrol into their most popular course on UI/UX design and it was a dream come true!

I'm grateful for the incredible team at UIUX Global and my trainer, Vivin Richard, who played a pivotal role in shaping my UIUX design journey.

A New Chapter: Becoming a Junior Trainer:

In June 2023, our team at UIUX Global, were discussing ways to further enhance the overall student experience. We realized that the Trainers were teaching during the classes and accessible during the week, the students could benefit from having an additional go-to person, mentor, and guide. And thatโ€™s how we introduced Junior Trainers - to assist students with queries, concerns, and feedback.

I was thrilled to be offered the opportunity to become a pilot Junior Trainer and take the next steps in my journey in the world of UIUX Global.

The Junior Trainer Experience:

My time as a junior trainer has been an exhilarating learning experience. Teaching students UIUX design has been super useful in honing my own UIUX skills as well as improving my ability to understand and engage with people on a deeper level.

Here are some of the valuable insights I've gained from this role:

  • The constant pursuit of self-improvement: To deliver better results, I must continuously learn and grow. Personal development becomes a way of life.
  • The art of managing people: This skill goes far beyond the classroom. I've become a motivator, a guiding light for those eager to learn and grow.
  • An expanding network: I meet a diverse array of individuals, each with their unique perspectives and experiences. It's like expanding my horizons with every interaction.
  • The power of two-way learning: As a Junior Trainer, I share my knowledge while learning from my students. It's the ultimate embodiment of "learn from your mistakes"!
  • The immense satisfaction of seeing a student succeed: It's truly special to see a student grasp a concept that I have explained. It's a testament to my ability to communicate and inspire understanding.
  • Growing confidence: With every class and interaction, I find myself becoming more confident. I feel like I am not just imparting knowledge; I am also shaping minds and empowering individuals to thrive in the UI/UX design world.
  • A source of reflection: Student doubts encourage me to revisit my knowledge and question the foundations of what I know. This pushes my boundaries of understanding.
  • Learning from senior trainers: The opportunity to learn from senior trainers is a priceless gift. I've gained invaluable wisdom and insights from those who have been through the journey.
  • A chance to give back: Being a Junior Trainer has also been an incredible opportunity for me to give back to the community that I have learned and received so much from.

Overall, I have gained as much as I have given during my journey as a Junior Trainer. The model has been a huge success and we have a Junior Trainer for every batch now - ensuring our students continue to have a phenomenal experience while giving our alumni an opportunity to learn, give back, and grow - together.

A Final Thought:

In closing, I'd like to leave you with this nugget of wisdom: never underestimate the power of continuous learning, even if it's just a humble 1% each day!
